A food lover's guide to all the best ingredients in the traditional foods of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Once upon a time we only had a few choices when it came to fine dining. There was American home-cooked, pretentious French cuisine, practical Italian, and Chinese takeout. These days, Indian restaurants are popping up everywhere, and for good reason. The food is amazing!

But how can you replicate the Indian dining experience at home? There are thousands of Indian grocery stores to shop in, but what should you buy? How do you prepare it? That's where this Take It With You guide comes in.

With 700 entries and over 200 illustrations, plus traditional stories and personal anecdotes about many of the ingredients unique to Indian cuisine, this guidebook identifies and tells you how to use the vast array of spices, rice, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and prepared foods at over 9,000 Indian grocery stores in America. A bonus section of the author's favorite recipes will help you create delicious, authentic dishes that will satisfy anyone's hunger and sense of adventure.

"Dare to buy at the ethnic grocery" 2007-07-13
By M. Archer (Oakland, CA, USA)
As more North Americans become better accustomed to the cuisines of India, the once-obscure ethnic groceries join our shopping destinations. This guide helps you choose from the variety of exotic, aromatic ingredients in the bins and packages of a typical Indian or Pakistani food store. It's especially helpful for produce, or items given only non-English names (what is sooji flour, anyway?)

"Very Good Guide to Your Local Indian Strip Mall Grocery" 2005-02-21
By B. Marold (Bethlehem, PA United States)
`The Indian Grocery Store Demystified' by book designer and illustrator, Linda Bladholm is an exposition of ingredients with a very nice little twist which saves it from being a poor man's `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients'. While Cost's classic book deals with the serious culinary details of a great many basic ingredients, Ms. Bladholm's book, as suggested by her title, is much more pointedly directed at the shopper's experience in your typical strip mall Indian market.

The author adds appeal and charm to her book by opening it with a visit to her own local mom and pop run Indian grocery store. The store in question was just a bit better organized and stocked than my own favorite Filipino run store in southern New Jersey, but all the familiar staples were there, if not in all the familiar places.

The device of providing a guided tour of an Asian market is reinforced by mentioning all the major brand names for staples such as rice, noodles, sauces, oils, and spice mixes, with opinions by the author of which may be the preferred brands. While I found a few misstatements, such as describing a gluten free flour as `general purpose' (general purpose flours by definition have 10% to 12% gluten producing proteins), and I missed some possible warnings against Texmati rice as a less than useful substitute for Basmati rice, I believe the advice and information in this book is a really great supplement to other books on Asian ingredients with a more scholarly bent.

By far the biggest weakness of the book is the difference in quality between the promise of `over 400 illustrations of ingredients' and the quality of those illustrations. The illustrations in the book are all small black and white line drawings easily fitting into an inch square area with lots of the pictures giving no sense of the kind of thing they are depicting. The little picture of ginger certainly looks like the ginger with which I am familiar, but the picture of the related galangal rhizome does little to assure me that I would be able to use that picture to pick it out from bins of produce labeled in Chinese characters. These poor illustrations give the lie to the claim that this is a `Take It With You' guide, in that it is dealing with a guide to items which may all be labeled in not only a foreign language, but in a script we are simply not used to interpreting. The very clever chapter headings of Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Tagalong and Korean ideograms for food categories (with English translations) do nothing to help the situation.

Note that unlike many other books on Asian ingredients, this book has few recipes using these ingredients. This is not necessarily a weakness, as it means that almost all the space in the book is dedicated to the book's principle topic, the groceries. And, much of this space is dedicated to subjects which purely culinary books may not touch such as teas and medicinal herbs and spices. This is probably not the best book on these subjects, but treating these topics enhances the treatment of the book's primary metaphor, the Indian grocery store, as they do, in fact, appear in Indian grocery stores.

The short appendix on cooking methods and utensils is not too helpful. These will be of little value if your Asian store has a good selection of cooking utensils.

This book is great if you find yourself living within easy shopping distance of a good Indian market. The book also useful if you plan to order lots of Indian groceries over the Internet, as the recommended brands gives one some assurance they are not buying sawdust. The book is less valuable for the culinary generalist, who has no special interest in Asian or Indian cuisine, especially in that the book includes no bibliography. For those readers, Bruce Cost's book mentioned above is far superior a source.

"When you're ready to go beyond the cookbook" 2003-11-24
By Karen Roman (Atlanta, GA)
I've been a slavishly devoted fan of Indian food since 1990, and in the process have managed to become a reasonably accomplished cook. But while there are a host of amazing cookbooks out there that have given me my repetoire, I had not been able to go 'beyond the cookbook' until I got "The Indian Grocery Store Demystified". Beforehand, my visits to the Indian market were very rewarding in that I could identify all the ingredients I needed for my recipes, but I was left with no explanation of what all that other STUFF could be used for. This book helped me to recognize all the wonderful products available, and how they could be used to leap beyond the recipe pages, and actually construct dishes and menus of my very own. Thanks to Linda Bladholm, I am less of a book-taught hobbyist working endlessly to perfect my craft, and more of an intuitive home chef creating satisfying dishes inspired by products that formerly left me puzzled and intimidated. A great resource to anyone who wants to encompass the whole of Indian home cooking, not just a handful of recipes.

 "disappointed" 2003-01-29
By Mark Milo (south milwaukee, wi United States)
Although this book has a lot of information, it has one really major flaw...the way in which it is organized. Many of the items are listed in the index and in the chapters under their English name, not their Indian name. Because of this, you cannot just look up an unfamiliar word, and find it's meaning. For example... if you wanted to look up the word "jeera", which means, cumin seed, you would not find it in the index as "jeera",you would have to look under the english term, "cumin seed". To me it seems that it is the Indian terms you would want to be looking up in most cases. The index should have included both the Indian and English term, so that you can look it up EITHER WAY. Although this book has lots of information, you would honestly be better of buying a cookbook that includes a glossary of ingredients that are listed as their INDIAN name, and you would save yourself a lot of time.

"Perfect Little Hand Truck. Excellent Design" 2010-01-11
By Citizen John (Washington, DC)
I got this for the office and I think every office would benefit from having one. It's just like the picture shows. You move around reams of paper and cases of beverages normally in an office. That's how I've used it and also to move empty tall file cabinets. It's lightweight and folds up real small so I have no trouble stowing it when not in use.

I can't believe this dolly is as strong as it is, able to handle at least 150 pounds. It only weighs 8 pounds. It's evidently solid aluminum. Also, the tires are solid rubber which means no maintenance. It folds up incredibly well and I have been very happy taking it in the car since it is folds up so well and is so lightweight.

This is really different than previous dollies I've used in offices. In the past I've had to use solid metal dollies and they were heavy. They were not convenient for taking in the car.

One great feature of this hand truck is the wide base. It's perfect for holding large cases of water bottles, for example. A perfect accessory - bungee cords. The set of bungee cords that I got is I believe the best deal:Master Lock 3023AT Assorted Bungee Cords, 24-Pack

For the price this is a great hand truck. I'm very happy with it and cannot recommend it highly enough. Honestly, I have no complaints or even suggestions on how the design could be better. The only limitation is the load limit of 150 pounds, although I think I exceeded it by a little bit once.

This folding cart is just what I needed to help me bring my wares in and out of craft fairs. It's easy to use and folds for storage. I used to drag a heavy duty dolly for the same purpose but this makes the job much easier. I especially like the retractable handle. This is a great item for anyone needing a helping hand for light weight things. Recommended.

"Magna Cart Personal Hand Truck has saved my back!" 2009-12-30
By Library Supporter! (Washington State)
When my job assignment changed from one library to four this year, I assumed a wheeled briefcase/laptop with four compartments would suffice. It didn't solve the problem of how to transport 3 or 4 canvas bags full of books requests and storytelling necessities; this hand truck did! The telescoping handle and folding wheels allow it to be stored in my trunk at all times ready for the heavy load days. Even in the rain, I can easily step on the base to release the wheels, place on a box and load it up with the bags. With one hand I push my wheeled briefcase and with the other hand pull the hand truck into the school library media centers in just one trip! This cart is a bargain! Magna Cart Personal Hand Truck

This little hand cart has been a back saver for me!! I use it for carting anything that is big, bulky, awkward or too heavy to carry. It conveniently folds up to a very small size, so I keep it in the trunk of my car so it is always handy. I have used it more than a dozen times in just the last few weeks. I love it! I highly recommend it to everyone.

We bought this for my youngest son's first birthday about 16 months ago. Him and his 6 year old brother have used it a lot in the past year and have been rather rough on it at times but it has held up remarkably well. We also throw it in the car with us sometimes when we are headed to the grocery store. Great way to keep them happy and occupied while we are grocery shopping. This toy is well made and we have more than gotten our money's worth out of it.

 "save your money" 2009-12-14
By Cam (chicago)
I spent a good while on Amazon looking at these carts trying to choose the right one. I chose wrong. This cart does not match the size specifications to what's advertised; at least the one I received doesn't. It's a good bit smaller. Also the front rod where the wheels attach is crooked. I'm not so sure it affects the functionality of the cart itself but I can't help but think it will cause a problem over time. Also, the way the wheels attach is kind of strange, as there's no good way to secure the wheels so that they don't ride across the ends of the rod over about an inch or so. So the cart constantly feels wobbly and unsteady. Overall the cart just doesn't feel very sturdy at all. I would be afraid to put the weight that it says it can hold in the cart. I would recommend to anyone looking for one of these to stay away from this one.

 "Very disappointing" 2009-08-08
By Cameron Shue (San Francisco, California)
The instructions were hard to figure out, like it was translated from another language. After using it five minutes, a big wheel fell off and all the associated hardware bounced off to disappear into the dark corners of a public garage.

When I called Amazon, who is the vendor, if you buy it from Target on the Amazon site, they could only offer a postal sticker, not a UPS one. They couldn't just send replacement hardware. They will send another cart, but I have to pack up the old one and take time off from work to lug it to the post office. I wouldn't have to do this if they would use UPS.

I am very disappointed in Amazon. It was very hard to hear the customer service person with all the noise in the background.

I am going to stop buying from Amazon the way that I have been.

A big waste of time. Don't buy it. If you buy a cart, get it through them from a different vendor. Maybe they will be more helpful than Amazon was.

"Fab cart - have had for at least 7 years" 2009-12-25
By Kathy (Washington DC)
I live in a high rise apartment bldg, walk everywhere when possible, and live across the street from a Costco and large supermarket. I use this cart every few days for shopping, occasionally for laundry, and for moving odds and ends. It is much, much better than the metal carts available because:

Pros:

- it has four sets of wheels so it is very maneuverable and you can load more weight than you can with a two wheel cart;

- things don't fall out given the canvas construction; I lost a fair number of apples and oranges in a metal cart I used to own;

- it's a lot quieter than the metal carts;

- I feel like it is a safer cart to operate. Years ago I was pushing my metal cart across the parking lot and the wheels caught a small lip in the pavement, this caused the cart to stop short unexpectedly and me to go flying over the handlebars so to speak. I suffered some bad bruises, cuts, a fair amount of embarrassment, and a badly damaged cart. As a result, I swore off the metal carts and bought this one and have never looked back.

- it's quite compact and easy to store; very similar in size to your standard baby stroller; no problem bringing it on metro and the like.

- takes a surprising amount of weight so long as you are sensible in how you load it; I've used it for the megapacks of water and Starbucks frappucinos from Costco without a problem but I wouldn't put something equally heavy if the load couldn't be equally distributed across the bottom. It will easily handle 4+ large sacks of groceries but keep in mind that at the bottom of the cart is an X metal structure with the canvas "cube" resting on top of it so putting something narrow and extremely heavy in one of the quadrants is not such a good idea. That said, I think people who are experiencing bending wheels and the like are simply overloading it and probably running the cart over very tough terrain. I've abused mine for 7 years and it shows little wear and tear but I keep in mind it's limitations.

- one can also hang bags off the handles if you fill up the main compartment;

- the canvas holding "cube" can be easily removed for cleaning as well as be used as a very large bag. I've never had a reason to remove it.

Cons:

- I'm only 5'2" so the height works well for me but I can definitely see how people much taller would find it to be awkwardly short for them.

- The plastic "hook" that keeps the the two handles together when in storage is poorly designed so it usually pops open on its own. Not a big deal since the cart will still remain quite compact on its own without the hook but it would have been nice if the manufacturer had field tested this component a little more. I may use a mini bungee cord in its place if I ever come across a suitable one.

Overall, I have got my money's worth out of this cart and I'm always telling the folks in my building that they should buy this cart whenever I see them struggling with their metal carts. Sure, the manufacturer should have put on larger, rubber wheels and used less plastic, but for the price and convenience it is a bargain. If the manufacturer were to produce a version using higher quality grade materials that practically guaranteed indestructability, I'd be very interested but for now, my cart serves my needs very well.

By chris (SF, CA)
As noted by other reviewers, this product is great until...it isn't!

At some point after a year or so of moderate use, my back wheels broke. In my case, it wasn't because of heavy weight (I used it for taking down the garbage <30 pounds I'm guessing).

And when they break, the company doesn't support the product.

Apparently this is why bed bath and beyond stopped selling the cart - because of product returns (BBB has an awesome return policy, even post-warranty).

IMHO, it should last longer than a year or two.

"Excellent and holds a ton" 2009-09-10
By ClickClack (Pacfic NW)
My Versa Cart is now almost 3 years old and besides a couple of straps that are broken from a new puppy eating through them this cart still takes abuse hauling my groceries from my car in the garage up to my apartment. Everyone that sees it in the elevator asks "Where did you get that"? It folds up to a nice slender bundle and sits right behind my seat on the floor in the backseat area or takes up a tiny bit of space in my trunk. I don't know what I would do without it.

 "Making Another Purchase" 2009-08-20
By Linda (New York)
I purchased this two years ago; not from Amazon but from a major home decor store. They no longer carry it, so here I am at Amazon ready to buy another. As one poster mentioned, yes, one of the rear wheels on mine has had it too, its tilting to the side making maneuvering difficult now, but in fairness: I have used/abused this cart for two years now so feel I got my money's worth. It is constantly being used on rough not well paved city streets, I load it up with very heavy items too. People are always stopping me asking me where I got this cart. Love the fact that it folds up like an umbrella when not in use so it's easy for me to store without taking up closet space. Buying this again!

"Sturdy and useful but not for tall people" 2009-03-10
By E. Gonzalez (New York, USA)
I have owned my cart for months now. I have had no issues and find it really useful. In fact, I am often stopped by people wondering where they can get it.

The ONE PROBLEM i have is the handles, or cart height, are not adjustable and the cart is low to the ground. If you are above 5"6ft tall you will have to do lots of slouch walking to push it.

 "Handy little cart" 2009-11-05
By K. Gibson (Murfreesboro, TN United States)
This is the second one of these little carts that I have bought. I use them in my closet for permanent press and regular laundry. I can wheel them to the laundry room and easily sort for washing. They are also handy for carrying bulky things from one room to another saving steps and time.

I received my cart in rapid time. I have searched for one of these for a while now and there it was on amazon. It is a great help with carrying in groceries and my oxygen tanks.

 "WONDERFUL" 2009-09-08
By Debra Daughtry (Lake Stevens WA USA)
I purchased this cart for my mom to help her get her laundry to the laundry room and to help get multiple bags of groceries from her car to her apartment. She really likes it and especially the shelf so she isn't piling her laundry on top of her soap or bags of groceries on top of each other. It folds up nicely too! The wheels are nice and sturdy.

We've had the cart for a month or so and walk 7 blocks to grocery twice a week. Cart easily maneuvers isles and holds 2 reusable cloth bags. Divider allows you to stack them without problems. Many admirers.

I'm sorry I didn't read A. Jacobs review before ordering. This is a piece of junk and I'm going to return it, although I'll probably only clear a dollar or two after paying for return shipping - call it a matter of principal. Not only was the so-called "fabric" a paper-like substance (with no identifying label) the Velcro "loops" didn't line up with the frame of the cart it was suggested for. This product doesn't even deserve one star, but apparently that's the lowest rating allowed. Save your time, money and aggravation. I'm not sure what (if anything) I'll line my new cart with, but I won't order it on-line!

"Not what it looks like" 2009-01-24
By A. Jacobs
First off, it took two weeks to get. I ordered it with the cart suggested on Amazon, and I got the cart in less then 48 hours from when I ordered it (and I ordered it on a Sunday) and I recieved the liner more then two weeks later. The liner is cheap cloth and looks like it's gonna break. I've been putting my pop up hamper in the cart and that fits a lot better. I also thought that as a liner, it would be good for doing laundry in the snow or rain to protect the clothes, nope.. not gonna happen. This liner is very thin and cheap, not worth the 7 or 8 bucks to buy it, and then another 5 or 6 to ship it. How does it cost 6 dollars to ship something so light and have it arive more then 2 weeks later? Don't order this, you will not be happy.

"What is fabric coming to!" 2008-05-31
By Ann Warner (Boonville, MO USA)
If you're expecting "real" fabric - think again! The liner is that awful pressed stuff, but it seems to do the job, I grudgingly admit. It is made to perfectly fit the cart, with tabs to hold it in place so you don't fight to keep it open when filling up the cart. Nice construction, just not what I expected it to be constructed of.

Absolutely thrilled with this product. It comes in real handy since I live in an upstairs apt. and carrying groceries/laundry is quite a chore! My cart liner makes this much easier to bring everything up/down in one trip versus several.
